In old paintings a theme was far more common then in modern phootgraphy. And that's a shame. Next to normal portrets there where a lot of historical scenes. Or complete battles, but that's to much work for me.
More simple but still a lot of work is The Reading Lady with Doreen. The light in this photo was set-up on the left top. On the other side there was a large reflector to keep the light on the setting more equal.
