Kaatsheuvelse IJsbaan

Canon 5Ds | EF 15mm fish eye | 12 photos | 1/80 - f/8.0 - iso 200

Kaatsheuvelse IJsbaan is located on the western edge of De Loonse en Drunense Duinen, surrounded by woodland. The ice rink consists of a large, artificially created body of water with an island in the middle. When temperatures drop sufficiently in winter and the ice becomes thick enough, many people come here to skate. In summer and autumn, however, the location takes on a very different character.

This panorama was taken in autumn. The trees surrounding the ice rink are then full of autumn colours, creating a varied landscape of green, yellow, orange and brown hues. The water forms a peaceful open space among the trees. From various viewpoints, you can enjoy clear views of the island, the water and the surrounding woodland.

Kaatsheuvelse IJsbaan lies within an area that forms part of De Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park. This nature reserve is best known for its extensive drifting sand dunes, but it also includes forests, heathland and several smaller natural areas. The surroundings of the ice rink therefore make an attractive destination for walking and cycling.

The name Kaatsheuvelse IJsbaan refers to the use of the body of water as an ice rink. It was dug by hand in the 1930s as a government-funded employment project during the economic crisis of that era.

When there is sufficient frost, skating enthusiasts can enjoy the ice. The combination of water, woodland and the island makes this location particularly interesting to photograph, even outside the skating season.

With this 360° panorama, you can look around and explore the surroundings from different directions. It gives you a good impression of the location of the ice rink and its surrounding landscape.
