A still life about things that pass

Vanitas

Canon 5D mk II / EF 85mm f/1.8 IS USM | 1/160 - f/18 - iso 100

A vanitas is a still life with a theme that adresses the things in life that pass. Everything passes, everything comes to an end. In this photo I used a number of typical examples that show that end. The hourglass for example, as time strikes. But als so the candle that just extinguished and the skull are typical symbols of things that fade away.

The word Vanitas has his origin in Latin and means vanity and emptiness. Soapbubles, glasses on their side and withered flowers; all symbols in this theme.
Famous painters of the Golden Age (17-th century) were Pieter Claesz and brothers Harmen and Pieter Steenwijck.
